A hardware company that wanted to sell software. Three platforms, 2,000 field workers, and a partner that still runs them.
A Fortune 500 consumer goods manufacturer with a portfolio of household-name brands wanted to sell digital products and services alongside its hardware. That meant building a whole digital estate at once: an operations platform for thousands of field workers, connected equipment that reports itself, the training to bring people onto both, and multilingual content for markets around the world. 3Rive built all of it as three platforms that talk to each other, and has hosted, maintained and extended them ever since.
The Challenge
Manufacturers have spent a decade hearing that they should become technology companies. Very few have a plan for what that involves on a Monday morning.
This manufacturer's commercial division served professional customers across several industries: facilities management, hospitality, healthcare, and commercial cleaning among them. Its products were physical. Its customers increasingly expected digital: a way to manage field operations on a phone rather than on paper, equipment that told them when it needed attention, training that reached a dispersed workforce, and product content in the language of whichever market they were in.
Meeting that expectation was not a system upgrade. It meant building an operations management platform for a field workforce in the thousands, connecting the equipment those workers use, building the training to make both land, and running content in multiple languages across global markets. All of it had to work at scale and across industries from the start. Piloting in one market and expanding later would not have answered the question the business was asking, which was whether it could credibly sell software at all.
And the manufacturer did not have, and did not want to build, an internal software engineering and hosting function to do it.
“3Rive has been a reliable and capable partner across our digital platforms for several years. They build what we need and they keep it running.”

The Solution: Three Platforms, Built to Connect, Run as a Service
3Rive designed and built a three-pillar digital estate, then took on hosting, maintenance and ongoing development of all three.
Pillar 1: Field Operations
An operations management platform, built as a small suite of mobile and web applications that work together, gave field workers and operations teams one digital toolset for daily work: tasks, schedules, inspections, reporting. It replaced the paper and spreadsheet processes that came before it and gave managers live visibility of work in the field for the first time.
Pillar 2: Connected Equipment and Training
IoT monitoring went onto equipment in the field, so operations teams see status, usage and performance as it happens rather than when something fails. It shipped alongside a training platform that brings field workers onto the new tools and the new equipment as they roll out. Monitoring and training were delivered together on purpose. Equipment that reports on itself is worth nothing if the person operating it does not know what to do with what it says.
Pillar 3: Global Content
A multilingual digital asset and content management hub gave marketing and product teams one place to manage, localise and publish content for global markets, replacing a separate content pipeline per region with one managed system and one source of truth for product information.
The Pillars Connect
Field data, equipment data and product content sit on shared foundations, so the business has one digital estate it can extend to new industries and markets rather than three programmes that do not talk to each other.
Run, Not Handed Over
Since launch, 3Rive has hosted all three platforms on Microsoft Azure and provided ongoing maintenance, support and enhancement under long-standing service agreements: platform upgrades, database and integration work, new features as the business asks for them, and the day-to-day support that keeps 2,000 field workers productive. The manufacturer sells digital products. 3Rive keeps them running.
The Approach
- Build the operations platform. Give field workers a single digital toolset in place of paper and spreadsheets.
- Connect with the equipment. IoT monitoring, so operations teams see status and performance as it happens.
- Train alongside the rollout. A training platform that reaches field workers at the same time the tools and equipment do.
- Centralise multilingual content. One content hub for global markets in place of per-region pipelines.
- Connect the pillars. Shared foundations so the three platforms form one estate.
- Host, maintain, and extend. Run the platforms as a managed service, so the manufacturer never has to build an engineering function to own them.
Becoming a digital-first business usually takes four things at once: an operations platform, connected equipment, the training to make both land, and content that works in every market you sell in. We build them so they connect, and we keep them running so you do not have to become a software company to sell software.
Outcomes
Operational
- Multilingual product and marketing content managed from a single hub across global markets, cutting localisation cycle time from weeks to days
- Three production platforms hosted, maintained and enhanced continuously by 3Rive on Microsoft Azure
Strategic
- A hardware manufacturer now sells digital products and services alongside its physical ones
- The digital estate spans multiple industries the business serves and extends to new markets without rebuilding
- No internal software engineering or hosting function required; 3Rive carries build, run and evolution under long-standing service agreements
